PROJECT OVERVIEW

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The existing Skills Passport on the abodoo platform provided a robust digital credentials profile, but lacked seamless sharing options. Users had no dedicated way to quickly showcase or export their passport in professional settings, such as conferences or job meets. The project's challenge was to design an export feature that allowed users to view all skills in an overview, download CV, or generate a QR code for easy scanning and sharing, extending this functionality to recruiters on desktop for candidate evaluation, also great way to promote the product at job meets.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As the lead designer on this project, my role was necessary in defining and solving key user experience challenges. In addition to creating high-fidelity prototypes and detailed design documents for the development team, I was responsible for presenting these solutions to the CEO. Collaborating closely on a day to day basis with the Project Manager, I ensured our design strategies aligned with business objectives, budget and functional requirements of the user.

DURATION & HANDOFF

The design process, from initial meetings to handing over documents to developers, spanned approximately 2 weeks. Initially the project was given priority, then it was put on hold but later resumed, completing it in under two weeks. The entirety of the project was designed in Figma, including the hand over documents for developers. I updated the entire company through Slack of its completion and updated the Atlassian document. The handover documentation includes pixel perfect screens and user flows. This mix of user flows with high fidelity screens helped developers understand how to handle every possible scenario.

SCOPE & CONSTRAINTS

In this project, my focus extended beyond the basic exporting tools; it also involved designing a new way of show casing the candidates key skills and experiences. The solution had to be more than a simple viewer, offering an overview of skills, export options based on each device, QR code generator, and cross-device compatibility. A notable design constraint was understanding what information was important to show case on the overview viewer for recruiters.

RESEARCH

Due to the tight deadline, the research process had to be shorten down to focus only on delivering an MVP. I quickly focused my attention to analysing a wide range of job, up skilling, courses, etc. platforms that would play a critical role in the final solution. These platforms provided a quick comparative landscape to understand the diverse ways of exporting, which skills or experiences needed to be highlighted and how good is the user experience.

To compensate for the gaps in direct competitor data, I used websites such as Behance and Dribbble for creative inspiration. Most of the examples I found weren’t related to our problems so I gathered the most valuable ideas and inspiration onto an art board in Figma. This art board collection was important to brainstorm several concepts, later polished out and transformed into actionable design strategies to push the project forward.

UNDERSTAND

In the beginning of the project, the issues we faced appeared straightforward, yet the complexity of user-specific exporting needs soon became apparent. This presented a unique challenge, as abodoo had no existing features analogous to what we were developing, leaving us without a baseline of analytical data. To navigate this uncharted terrain, I relied on insights gained from my experience with similar platforms, blending this knowledge with innovative design and development strategies.

Collaboration with the project manager was key in tackling these challenges. Through daily stand-up meetings, we continuously evaluated our progress and adapted to new challenges. These sessions were critical for pushing the project forward. Over time, we observed an expanding project scope, particularly with recruiters viewing candidate passports, who required a distinct desktop pathway.

Our primary objective evolved into crafting a user experience that was not only intuitive and easy but a visually pleasing passport. This foresight was crucial in creating a flexible and robust exporting system, capable of adapting to changing user needs and expanding platform functionalities.

1. What’s the problem you are trying to solve?

The problem we aimed to solve was enhancing the user experience for Skills Passport sharing on abodoo, which lacked a passport and quick, portable export options, especially in accommodating sharing this information.

2. Who are the users and what are their goals?

The users are abodoo platform's diverse clientele, including jobseekers and recruiters, with goals of seamless credential sharing and evaluation facilitated through a streamlined, intuitive exporting process.

3. How will they benefit from this feature?

Users will benefit from a more intuitive, exporting process, leading to improved sharing efficiency, reduced friction, and a smoother experience in professional networking.

4. What will the target persona be doing when they encounter this feature?

Upon encountering this feature, the target persona, typically a jobseeker at an event or a recruiter evaluating candidates, will navigate through a overview of keys skills and experiences.

5. What threshold of quality do we need in order for customers to experience core product benefits?

The quality threshold required is a user-friendly, intuitive interface with reliable functionality, ensuring a seamless exporting process that enhances user satisfaction and trust in the platform.

6. What assumptions are we making?

We are assuming that will use the QR sharing process instead of exporting a PDF an airdrop it.

COMPETITOR ANALYSIS

Facing time constraints and limited insights from direct competitors, I adapted my research approach to include platforms with sharing features. Exploring professional networks like LinkedIn, credential apps, and QR-based tools, I gathered valuable insights from their advanced export methods. While these systems had different user narratives, their UI designs offered diverse approaches to user interaction, crucial for our objectives. This broader perspective was instrumental in crafting an exporting process for abodoo that was both user-friendly and sophisticated. By synthesising these insights, I conceptualised several design options, each intuitive, flexible, and finely tuned to meet the specific needs of our users.

PAINPOINTS

In tackling the Exporting Skills Passport project, I faced the challenge of limited research time coupled with little information about similar features. To effectively navigate this part of the design phase, I pivoted my research towards diverse platforms with relevant parallels, such as professional networks and credential apps. These platforms, while not direct competitors, provided valuable insights into friendly user interface designs.

Although these platforms catered to different user stories, their UI/UX designs offered versatile approaches beneficial to our context. This strategic shift in research was crucial in developing an exporting process tailored to abodoo's needs. It allowed me to identify essential features and create a few conceptual designs, enhancing the user experience for our diverse roles and preparing the system for potential future expansions.

EFFORT VS IMPACT

The use of an effort vs impact matrix was deemed unnecessary as the project's scope was clearly defined and straight forward. This streamlined approach allowed us to efficiently convert these critical features into user stories, facilitating a rapid transition from concept into creating high-fidelity mockups.

This method ensured that each feature was directly aligned with user needs, supporting our goal to enhance the user experience without the need for prioritisation typically aided by an effort vs impact analysis. The chart was updated with some more ideas as the project progressed.

ROADMAP

We initially focused on deploying an MVP that promptly met user's fundamental needs. There were some features that was a must have as it was basic functionality that was needed to be meet the goals of this project.

IDEATION & DESIGN

Normally I would start this process with wireframes but since I was reusing some components from the existing platform, I streamlined the process even further. The idea behind reusing the same components was to reduce time it would take to develop a new design. As each idea evolved, they got more complex and visually appealing.

After multiple iterations, I finalised a user flow that allowed the user to view or share the passport quickly from two locations. This flow allowed for a quicker implementation of this feature for both website and app platforms. The MVP effectively displayed the users key skills and experiences using tabs, scrolling and a banner like section to scan the QR code. At the bottom there is a large Download button for further convenience.

Finally, I validated these user flows with the Project Manager, advancing to the development of detailed high-fidelity visuals. There was no need for a prototype here as there was no testing needed and the only deliverable here was a hand over documentation for developers.

HOW MIGHT WE

"How Might We" statements were crafted to stimulate creative thinking and problem-solving.

  • How might we effectively communicate the correct key skills and experiences?

  • How might we design the exporting process to be intuitive and user-friendly for diverse devices?

  • How might we implement the QR generation code wise?

  • How might we design the exporting process to be equally effective on both mobile and desktop platforms, considering the different user interfaces and interactions?

USER STORIES

I developed user stories closely aligned with our users' experiences. These stories guided our design, ensuring that each feature addressed real user needs and real statuses of the exporting requirements. This approach helped us empathise with our users, leading to an exporting process that was intuitive, user-centric, and highly effective in meeting their specific requirements.

User story 1

As a new jobseeker, I want to activate the export modal easily, so that I can quickly view or share my Skills Passport.

User story 2

As a jobseeker, I want to download my CV from the Skills Passport, so that I can have a PDF version for professional use in job applications or networking.

User story 3

As a jobseeker, I want to generate a QR code for sharing my Skills Passport, so that I can enable easy scanning and access by others at events or meetings.

HI-FI DESIGNS

In the pursuit of an effective MVP for the abodoo project, I crafted several passport design concepts to fit in all skills and experiences. In the end, I used tabs to solve the issue of fitting all the information into one single page and figuring out what information is key. We also believed that showing less information on your passport might confuse the users thinking the PDF downloadable version would also be condensed, which was not the case.

No wireframes or prototypes were designed in this project as we had a tight deadline and most of the components was reusing existing components from the platform to streamline implementation. Each mockup of the passport was shown to the project manager on a daily basis. The most effective and simplest designs were shown to the CEO for approval.

Once I had a sign off from the CEO, I continued on with the project by creating the final handover documentation for the developers. This documentation demonstrated how this view passport and export feature worked on both desktop website and mobile app. This ensured that the developers had every asset they needed and flows laid out for even faster implementation.

TESTING & LAUNCH

This new passport pop up finally makes the Skills Passport whole. This is an integral component in helping users and potential investors mentally connect their profile with a passport and the name of the product. A platform called literally Passport had no passport like component. It lacked the very thing the platform was named after. Now it is whole.

As I am writing this, this feature hasn’t been implemented into the platform yet so I lack analytical data, but the positive feedback from the CEO, project manager and potential clients became our barometer for success, affirming the effectiveness of my solution. No further testing was conducted to keep inside the budget.

Continual enhancement will be made to further improve the design of the passport and add additional nice to haves. First the feature needs to be implemented and gather further feedback from real users.

CONCLUSIONS

The exporting feature was meticulously crafted to bring in a necessary functionality to a job seeking platform. Our design solution effectively addressed all the identified issues, culminating in a modal that stands out for its aesthetic appeal and its substantial enhancement of the user experience.

This project was not very demanding and had a tight deadline. With the time and budget given, the proposed solution was well received and met every expectations. There is always room for improvement not only in the design but also in the process. User testing is essential but not necessary for a simple project as this. Once this feature gets implemented, we can get it in the hands of users to get valuable feedback to improve. This insight will be invaluable for future projects, ensuring a thorough consideration of all innovative features from the outset.
